What metal braces are made of
Metal braces are the most common type of braces. Today\u2019s versions are smaller, flatter and more comfortable than older ones, and patients of all ages choose them. Traditional metal braces are made of stainless steel or titanium and have three main parts:
- Brackets are bonded to the teeth with a special glue.
- Archwires are thin metal wires that connect the brackets and apply pressure to guide your teeth into place.
- Ligature elastics are the colored ties that hold the archwires to the brackets. We change them at each appointment, and they come in a variety of colors.
How braces work
Braces apply constant pressure that moves your teeth into the right position. At each appointment Dr. Villa may tighten the archwires, and some patients also need rubber bands or headgear. Your teeth may feel a little loose while you wear braces. That is normal, it is temporary, and it goes away once your teeth finish moving.

We treat children, teens and adults. We recommend a first orthodontic evaluation around age 7. Dr. Villa tells you honestly which treatment fits your bite, whether that is metal braces, clear braces or clear aligners, so you are not guessing.
